Evergreen dioecious shrub of wet, often saline habitats that produces small clustered flower heads in fall. Male plants provide nectar attractive to honey bees late in the season when few other sources remain available; pollen is also collected. Tolerates periodic flooding and salt spray but prefers consistently moist soils.
