A drought-tolerant shrubby perennial whose purple flower spikes provide nectar and pollen to honeybees and native bees during midsummer. Bloom occurs from the base upward over several weeks on well-drained sandy or rocky soils; plants develop deep taproots and fix nitrogen but may be browsed by deer.
