Wind-pollinated evergreen tree whose male catkins provide an early spring pollen source for honeybees; nectar absent. Flowers triggered by warm temperatures in late winter to mid-spring. Long-lived tree tolerant of drought once established but sensitive to overwatering and soil compaction.
