Bees visit the bowl-shaped flowers for nectar and abundant pollen during the spring bloom period. Individual plants produce a flush of colorful blooms lasting several weeks that supports foraging in arid landscapes. The species is extremely drought-tolerant once established and requires sharply drained, sandy or rocky soil to prevent root rot.
