An annual pioneer species of disturbed sites whose small disc flowers provide nectar visited by honeybees and wasps in late summer and fall. It supports foragers but is not recognized as a significant honey-flow contributor. Plants colonize open woods, edges, and waste ground and produce abundant wind-dispersed seed.
