Inspection Rhythm

How often to inspect, what to check, and when to leave them alone.

Less is more

New beekeepers inspect too often and disrupt the colony. Aim for a real frame-by-frame inspection every 10-14 days during the active season. Quick external checks (bee traffic, dead bees on the landing board, weight) can be daily.

What to look for

Eggs in the bottom of cells (proof of recent queen laying)
Brood pattern: tight and consistent vs. shotgun spotty
Stores: capped honey arc above the brood
Pests: varroa, small hive beetle, wax moth signs
Temperament: any sudden change is a warning sign
