Inspection Rhythm

How often to inspect, what to check, and when to leave them alone.

Less is more

New beekeepers inspect too often and disrupt the colony. Aim for a real frame-by-frame inspection every 10-14 days during the active season. Quick external checks (bee traffic, dead bees on the landing board, weight) can be daily.

What to look for

  • Eggs in the bottom of cells (proof of recent queen laying)
  • Brood pattern: tight and consistent vs. shotgun spotty
  • Stores: capped honey arc above the brood
  • Pests: varroa, small hive beetle, wax moth signs
  • Temperament: any sudden change is a warning sign
