Inspection Rhythm
How often to inspect, what to check, and when to leave them alone.
Less is more
New beekeepers inspect too often and disrupt the colony. Aim for a real frame-by-frame inspection every 10-14 days during the active season. Quick external checks (bee traffic, dead bees on the landing board, weight) can be daily.
What to look for
- Eggs in the bottom of cells (proof of recent queen laying)
- Brood pattern: tight and consistent vs. shotgun spotty
- Stores: capped honey arc above the brood
- Pests: varroa, small hive beetle, wax moth signs
- Temperament: any sudden change is a warning sign
